Name: Emily Lane
Title of Project: The Human Cloning Debate
Title of Research Paper: Stem Cell Research: Ethics and Legislation
Synopsis of Research Paper: The paper examines the multiple types of stem cells and the current state of the research in the field. Next, it analyzes the ethical issues surrounding the research and the legal policies made to regulate the science. It concludes with the notion that permissive regulation is where our nation is headed and where it should remain to move towards.
Description of Project: The class that I was instructing was split into two halves. One group was arguing for a ban on all cloning, both therapeutic and reproductive, while the other was fighting against such a ban. I gave the students about 45 minutes to gather research from the provided sources, including myself. The students asked me a good amount of questions. Finally each side would present their argument and then they questioned the opposing argument. The goal of the project was to peak the students interest in the subject of cloning and make them aware of this new science.
Relationship between Project and Paper: Therapeutic cloning is a process in which an embryo is created in a labaratory enviornment for the sole purpose of being destroyed as embryonic stem cells are harvested. This could propel stem cell research much further with a larger pool of stem cells, however many see it as the destruction of life. I thought that cloning would be a much more interesting debate than stem cell research, so I focused the debate on US cloning policy which is, at the moment, nonexistent.
My Background Experience in the Area: My freshman year in my Biology class, I created an extra credit project that talked about the ethical controversies of embryonic stem cell research. This was very interesting to me. Further, I learned that one of my favorite artists, Andrew McMahon, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and cured with stem cells. I did soe independent research on the science.
Things I Would Like the Judges to Consider: One of my challenges with this project was that I was unaware the portable I would be teaching in did not have wi-fi capabilities. This means that my website I created for the students to research from would not be accessible. Therefore, the morning of the project I printed hard copies of all of my research and checked some books out of the library for the students to use. This made the process a little more difficult and stressful, but I still found the project to be a success.
