Dear Judges,
For my entire life I have been an indecisive person. I have concluded that each decision made destroys infinite versions of myself. If I were to have chosen a different high school, who would I be right now? My experiences would be different, but would they have led me to the same place I am at today? This committment to a single path intimidates me and often leads me to leave all possibilities open by not committing to anything. However, this leaves you with no path or direction; infinite possibilities, with none of them coming to fruition. By choosing the Legal Studies Academy, I have gained experience that has helped me develop into a much wiser version of myself.
The senior project, though seen as a sort of dark legend of the Academy, was what I looked forward to most. Making an impact on my community, even on a small scale, was appealing to me. I'm sure everyone says this, but I know I am going to change the world. I will touch peoples' hearts in some way. I might not cure cancer or be the president, but if I change one person's world for the better, I will be satisfied. This was what drove me to research stem cell research for my paper. My favorite artist, one of my huge inspirations, Andrew McMahon was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 2005. His sister's stem cells saved his life, but it was a risky and painful journey. If we could end this kind of human suffering with more medical research, why wouldn't we? I became passionate in For the project I created a website all about human cloning, both therapeutic and reproductive. I had two classes used this website and other sources to create an argument for or against cloning and then had them present each argument to see who was most convincing. I chose this because I think human cloning has to be an interactive issue. Right now, there is no federal legislation for or against cloning. If we do not set clear legislation it remains unregulated research, something that worries me.
The choices we make really do define who we become. I have grown so much in four years and learned from the people around me. The academy has lead me to my next choice and journey in life which will be college at George Mason University. As per usual, I will be starting as an undeclared major, leaving all the doors open until I choose one.
I hope you enjoy the rest of my portfolio and presentation. Thank you for taking the time to aid in my senior project process
Sincerely,
Emily Grace Lane
